Chong Cao/Dong Chong Xia Cao/Cordyceps/Caterpillar Fungus is a parasitic fungus that predates on specific insects and its larvae. The fungus germinates in living organisms, killing and mummifying the insect, and finally growing outward from the insect/larvae body.
From a Chinese Herbal perspective:
Cordyceps is a Yang tonic, with a sweet and warm Qi. It affects mainly the Kidney and the Lungs. It seems to have some affinity with Lungs where it can moisture dryness, relieve cough, transform Phlegm and stop bleeding. Once a Yang tonic with affinity with the Kidneys it has been indicated for impotence and other sexual dysfunctions stemming from a weakened Yang. It is often used as an overall yang Tonic when in convalescence.
From a Western medical perspective:
Cordyceps contains more than 10 different aminoacids and trace minerals. Preliminary studies have researched Cordyceps in the following areas:
- Protection of bone marrow and digestive systems from irradiation;
- Regulation of immune functions;
- Cholesterol levels;
- Blood Pressure;
- Hypoglycemic effects in cases of insulin resistance;
- Energy production and tonic effects through heightened ATP energy cycles.
Cordyceps are often used in soups and decoction in Tibet and South China.
